That fill slumps as the wood rots, and on wet hill ground it slumps more, so for anything that matters, turf, a build, or a replant, we suggest pulling the chip out and backfilling with topsoil. We can do that as a line item, or you can shovel it yourself. Either way the stump is gone and the spot is ready to move on.

How deep does the grinder go?
Standard is 200 to 300mm under the surface, which suits new turf, a garden bed or a path base. For a footing, a slab or replanting another tree on the same spot we grind to 400 to 500mm, deeper again where the species and root spread allow. Tell us what is going in and we match the depth to it.
Will the grinder fit through a narrow Monbulk side gate?
If the gate is 900mm clear or wider, yes. The narrow-track machine covers nearly every village block and most of the older hill cottages. For anything tighter, or a stump stuck inside a courtyard, we walk it on the quote and either hand the smaller machine through, or work out another way in.
Why does a eucalypt stump take longer to grind?
The big hill eucalypts, mountain ash, messmate and the like, put down a dense, wide root plate that runs harder than a soft garden tree. The grinder has to work through more solid wood over a larger footprint, so a fat eucalypt stump simply takes more machine time than its diameter alone might suggest.
Can several stumps be ground in one visit?
Yes, and it works out cheaper per stump because we only mobilise the machine up the hill once. Worth doing the lot together if you have inherited a few old removals, or there is a row along the back fence. Send through how many and rough diameters and we quote them as one job.
